You might think that an art museum with masterpieces dating back to the 19th century would have little need for modern tools such as Facebook or Twitter. But for the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, N.H., social media and email play a critical role in getting visitors and members in the door. They even helped shape an entire exhibition.
The Currier’s The Secret Life of Art: Mysteries of the Museum Revealed exhibition provided visitors with a behind-the-scenes look at the museum’s staff and how its 31,000 items are cared for, displayed, and stored when not in use.
Museum staff relied on visitor feedback when designing the exhibit. By asking questions through YouTube videos, a dedicated blog, and the Currier Museum’s monthly email newsletter, the staff was able to make sure that the exhibit would have a little something for everyone.
